Course Details : Oxygen Therapy

Course Description

The use of supplemental oxygen is a vital component in the management of patients with hypoxemia. This 3-hour course emphasizes key considerations applicable to the rehabilitation professional in effectively managing patients receiving supplemental oxygen.  Time will be spent discussing the physiological and scientific underpinnings of oxygen therapy, typical oxygen delivery systems, clinical considerations in the titration of supplemental oxygen, safety concerns, and appropriate patient education on breathing techniques to decrease breathlessness. The learner will benefit from organized clinical decision making and effective treatment considerations in the management of patients with hypoxemia.   Clinicians will be challenged to integrate and synthesize learned concepts in decision making through the use of various clinical case studies.    

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the learner will: 

1. Recognize the evidence on the benefits of supplemental oxygen use in a variety of patients presenting with hypoxemia. 
2. Discuss various forms of oxygen delivery systems used in clinical practice. 
3. Identify appropriate safety considerations in the management of patients receiving supplemental oxygen.
